How long does the audit history of owned metadata last in production?

I seem to recall that in the past, the audit history of at least some owned metadata in production got lost every time a patch was delivered. Is that still the case?

I received advice that for the most part, audit history of metadata is now preserved with a few limited exceptions. That has been the case of the last few years with improvements in patching tooling.
