Do I have to go through the full picking process in order to ship my Sales Order?
Yes and no. The full picking process must be completed to ship an item from inventory. However, depending on your organization’s needs, there are currently two shipment methods that handle picking differently:
1-Step Shipment
-
Process: In a 1-step shipment, the picking and shipping processes are combined into a single step. Once an inventory item is ready to enter the picking process, the person picking the items directly creates a shipment for the picked items and confirms the shipment without needing to go through a separate picking application.
-
Usage: This method is generally used in smaller warehouses where the same person is responsible for both picking and shipping the items.
-
Simplicity: The workflow is streamlined, bypassing the pick release process and eliminating the need for separate roles for picking and shipping.
2-Step Shipment
- Process: In a 2-step shipment, the picking and shipping processes are separated into two distinct steps:
-
Picking: The picker selects the items, records this in the picking application, and deposits the items in a staging area.
-
Shipping: A shipper then packs the items, creates the shipment record, and confirms the shipment.
-
Usage: This method supports a more conventional process where different individuals or teams handle picking and shipping.
-
Complexity: While this approach involves more steps and coordination, it provides better control and accuracy—especially in larger warehouses.
